Think Twice Before Checking Into An Howard Johnson Express Inn

It was ten at night when we pulled in to the Howard Johnson express inn. We had been on the highway for ten hours, maybe more. I had lost track, but one thing was for sure: it had been a long long day. The last town back had had a Motel 6, and we had almost pulled off for that, except for the fact that my traveling companion had had a somewhat unpleasant experience at a Motel 6 a few years back. It seems that the room was infested with the black mold. One night there, and he was sick for a week.

So, getting to the Howard Johnson express inn, there was nothing I wanted more in the world than a good shower, an hour of tv to numb my brain, and then blessed, if slightly overpriced, sleep. Between two of us, me and my best friend Adam, you’d think that ten hours or so of driving wouldn’t be so much. It wouldn’t normally: conversation was good, and when that failed, we knew dozens of songs that we could sing together to pass the time. The only problem was that Adam couldn’t drive, being half blind. And, by the time we got in to that Howard Johnson express inn, I was half blind myself from staring at the road for so long.

It wasn’t a bad night in that Howard Johnson express inn. Probably the best spot that we could find in the middle of Idaho without spending a lot more money than we had. I’ve always found Howard Johnsons to be pretty clean and well put together. This one even had a little sauna room in the basement, although we were both too tired to use it. I suppose that I would normally have noticed the dead roach lurking beside the nightstand, but I was much too tired from my long day of driving.

Too tired, that is, until I was suddenly awakened by thousands of malevolent, insectile feet clambering the length of my body. I was so petrified, I was afraid to scream. Let me just say that we were out of that Howard Johnson express inn faster than I knew I could put on a pair of shoes. We only paused to demand our money back. Now usually in my experience, the staff of Howard Johnson express inn is friendly and accommodating. This must have been malicious night. Let me just say that I’d shout a few times by the time I was out of there with a full refund. I’ll never stay at a Howard Johnson express inn again!
